Car transport from Austria to Denmark

Austria’s used-car market is rich in well-maintained German-brand cars, often with a full service history, and Vienna connects to dealers across Central Europe.

We usually carry the car north through Germany, entering Denmark via Jutland or the Rostock–Gedser ferry. Where possible we combine cars into shared loads to keep the price per car down.

Importing the car to Denmark: registration and tax

To register a used car from another EU country in Denmark, the car must pass a registration inspection (registreringssyn, often called toldsyn) at an approved inspection centre, and Danish registration tax (registreringsafgift) is paid to Motorstyrelsen, the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency, before plates are issued. The tax is based on the car’s value and CO₂ emissions, so it is worth calculating before you buy. If the car counts as new for VAT purposes (under 6 months old or under 6,000 km), Danish VAT is paid in Denmark. No customs duty applies between EU countries.

Car transport from Denmark to Austria

When a Danish-registered car is exported permanently, it is deregistered in Denmark and, if the car qualifies, part of the registration tax can be refunded through Motorstyrelsen (eksportgodtgørelse). Our CMR consignment note documents the transport out of Denmark. The new owner then registers the car in Austria under local rules.

Frequently asked questions

How long does car transport from Austria to Denmark take?

Typically 3–4 days door to door, depending on the pickup location and whether the car joins a shared load. We usually carry the car north through Germany, entering Denmark via Jutland or the Rostock–Gedser ferry.

Do I need customs clearance between Austria and Denmark?

No. Both are EU member states, so there is no customs clearance or customs duty. The car travels with its registration documents and a CMR consignment note issued by Hert.

What do I pay when registering the car in Denmark?

Danish registration tax (registreringsafgift), calculated by Motorstyrelsen from the car’s value and CO₂ emissions, plus the registration inspection fee. Danish VAT applies only if the car counts as new (under 6 months or under 6,000 km).

Can you also transport a car from Denmark to Austria?

Yes, we run this route in both directions. For exports from Denmark, part of the Danish registration tax may be refunded when the car leaves Denmark permanently (eksportgodtgørelse).

Can you transport just one car?

Yes. We transport single vehicles as well as multi-vehicle loads. The price per vehicle depends on the route, the vehicle size and whether it can join a shared load.

Updated October 2026. Tax and registration rules change, so check the current rules with Motorstyrelsen (Danish Motor Vehicle Agency).
